SAGE ADVOCACY DISCUSSES ISSUES AROUND CONSENT IN RELATION TO THE ROLLOUT OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE IN NURSING HOMES ON LMFM January 6, 2021

Listen back here

Sarah Lennon, Executive Director of Sage Advocacy, joins LmFm'S Michael Reade Show to highlight the issues around consent and the rollout of the Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine in nursing homes from this week.

Ms Lennon said that a balance must be struck between ensuring that there is an efficient roll out of the vaccine programme and the need to ensure that informed consent to the vaccine is given by residents and that they have access to the information, time and support they need to make an informed choice.

Ms Lennon said it is important that residents who lack the decision-making capacity are also supported and outlined that the big issue around consent in Ireland is the non-commencement of the Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act, which was signed into law on the 30th December 2015.

The Executive Director of Sage Advocacy said that the organisation is very aware that many nursing home residents and their families would like to see the roll out of the Covid-19 vaccine accelerated.
