A COMMITTMENT TO THE COMMISSION ON CARE IS URGENTLY NEEDED SAGE ADVOCACY TELLS THE MICHAEL READE SHOW ON LMFM April 13, 2021

Listen back here

Sarah Lennon, Executive Director, Sage Advocacy joins LMFM's Michael Reade show to discuss whether it is the right time to take a root and branch approach to reviewing the suitability of care in nursing homes.

Ms Lennon said one of the key questions that must be addressed is whether nursing home care is the best model going forward.

Sage Advocacy has repeatedly highlighted the weaknesses in the current systems of health and care and in particular the “dangerous architecture” on which the system of care in congregated settings for older people is built.

Ms Lennon said one of the major issues is that nursing homes are organised differently; there are HSE operated nursing homes, private and voluntary nursing homes and also there are unregulated care homes.

Ms Lennon said what is urgently needed now is a commitment to establishing the promised Commission on Care which could look at all the different models of nursing homes and examine if they are working or not working.
