Given the projections indicating an ageing Ireland and a slowly growing awareness that staff shortages in the health and social care sectors are likely to act as a brake on economic as well as social development, it is the contention of Sage Advocacy that there is now an urgent need to actively encourage the development of a ‘mixed economy’ in the social care sphere to address the dangerously high levels of private control over service delivery that have been allowed to emerge. Central to the development of a ‘mixed economy’ of care must be the strategic development of social enterprise based on a clear commitment to ensure that at least 33% of provision occurs through social enterprise by 2030.
