Well known journalist, broadcaster and advocate for the rights of older people is 'really looking forward to supporting Sage with their public awareness and media work'. Valerie spoke recently at an event organised by Sage in collaboration with the Institute of Banking to promote public and professional awareness of the implications of the Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015, where she recounted the experience she and her family had when her husband became very ill.
'My husband Brian developed a very rare and life threatening disease some years ago. He had to be flown back to Ireland in an air ambulance to a well known acute hospital on the Southside of Dublin. Despite it being his ‘will and preference’ that he would not want to be cared for in a nursing home the expert doctors decided that it was in his ‘best interests’ that he should go into a nursing home. They picked on the wrong family. Happily Brian has made a remarkable recovery and we continue to live together in the home that we love with our cats and dogs.'
Sage Advocacy is delighted to welcome Valerie to the team and we look forward to working together.
